In 2006, Apple stopped producing iBook and PowerBook laptops and introduced the MacBook. Completely different design, no longer rounded shapes and colourful covers known from the iBook G3. In MacBook models, Apple ceases to mount PowerPC processors – created by itself in cooperation with Motorola and IBM – and began to use Intel processors. The MacBook is an entry-level laptop series aimed at the consumer and educational market, in addition to it, Apple also offers the mid-level MacBook Air and top-level MacBook Pro. The first-generation MacBook had a white or black Polycarbonate case (later also aluminium Unibody). The MacBook turned out to be a huge market success. For several months of 2008, it was the best-selling laptop in the United States.
First-generation MacBooks were equipped with Intel Core2Duo processors. Only the Early 2006 model had an Intel CoreDuo processor installed. They were equipped with an optical drive called ComboDrive or SuperDrive (however, you can find several models from 2008-2009 without an optical drive). Apple in this model for the first time presents the revolutionary MagSafe charger – no more torn out charging ports! Interestingly, in the first MacBook fluorescent lamp was used as the screen backlight. It wasn’t until 2008 that Apple used LEDs for this purpose and they also didn’t have a backlit keyboard. The MacBook is also the first model where Apple replaced the mini-VGA analogue port with a mini-DVI digital port. It had an Intel GMA graphics card integrated with the processor, or a separate Nvidia 9400M or 320M graphics card.

After a few years break, Apple resumed production of the MacBook line in 2015 with a 12-inch screen. It was Apple’s most compact laptop at the time. Therefore, to distinguish it from the previous series, this model is called colloquially MacBook 12 inch, or MacBook Retina. The MacBook 12 inch is available in the following colours: Space Gray, Silver, Gold, Rose Gold and New Gold. Unlike the 1st generation MacBook, which ranks below the MacBook Air, the MacBook Retina is between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. It was also the quietest laptop of all MacBook, for the first time Apple used fanless cooling and an ultra-quiet Butterfly keyboard. Building a laptop without a fan was possible thanks to the use of a new, ultra-energy-efficient Intel Broadwell Core M processor (In newer models replaced by Intel Skylake Core M, and Intel Kaby Lake m3, i5, and i7.). The use of a new processor has also allowed to significantly reduce the size of the motherboard – it is now smaller than on some iPad models

The main disadvantage of this MacBook series was the use of only one USB-C port, which was also the charging port. This model no longer has a MagSafe connector. In addition, Thunderbolt is no longer supported, so if you have storage media with this connector or Apple Thunderbolt Display, they will not be supported by the MacBook Retina.

The MacBook Retina at first glance resembles the MacBook Air, but it is smaller, lighter, has a larger SSD memory and RAM memory – SSD and RAM are soldered permanently to the motherboard. Each keyboard key now has a backlight LED. This makes the keys highlight more evenly. The trackpad button has been replaced by haptic feedback, also used in Magic Trackpad 2 and MacBook Pro 2015.

Known issues

At present, mass defects of these models are not yet known.

MacBook screen replacement

MacBook screen replacement Bournemouth.

The screen in the MacBook is one of the most delicate elements. Each new generation has thinner lids, narrower frames. It certainly looks amazing, but it is also getting more delicate. I am afraid that soon for the MacBook it will be necessary to buy silicone bumpers that we buy for phones today.

When an accident occurs and your screen is damaged, take it easy – there’s a “Phones Rescue” that will professionally repair your MacBook.

MacBook Polycarbonate screen replacement

There are three different MacBook series that differ in the design of the screen. MacBook 13 inches produced in the years 2006 – 2012 did not have a glass protecting the screen. Its housing was made of white or black polycarbonate.

MacBook Unibody screen replacement

In 2009, Apple also presented the MacBook in an aluminium case – model MacBook Unibody A1278. Not to be confused with the MacBook Pro, which was also called A1278. This model had a glass protecting the LCD display against damage. In this model, it was possible to change the glass and LCD independently. This allowed to significantly reduce repair costs.

MacBook Retina screen replacement

Between 2012 and 2015, Apple no longer produced the MacBook, only the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. However, in 2015, Apple resumed production with the MacBook Retina model. This laptop had a 12-inch screen and the glass protecting the screen was permanently glued to the display. If the glass breaks, it must be replaced together with the LCD display.

MacBook Polycarbonate battery replacement

On some MacBook Polycarbonate models, you can replace the battery yourself – just use a coin to unlock the battery lock and install a new one. Unfortunately, in the Polycarbonate Unibody model, you need to unscrew the housing to get to the battery. In this case, we recommend contacting us to replace the battery.

The first generation MacBook Pro resembled a PowerBook G4, but was distinguished by the fact that an Intel processor was used instead of a PowerPC. This caused a lack of backward compatibility with applications from previous models. A webcam and innovative MagSafe charging connector have also been added. The optical drive used in the MacBook Pro 1 generation is slower than the one in the PowerBook, and also does not support Dual Layer DVD. Both 15 and 17 inch models were equipped with ExpressCard/34 slot (instead of the PC card used in the PowerBook) and FireWire 400 port. Apple has been criticised for the lack of FireWire800 ports. The MacBook 15 inch had 2 USB ports and the MacBook 17 had 3 USB 2.0 ports. All models had built-in Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 2.0 and WiFi ports working in the 802.11a/b/g standard – changed to 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 in newer models.
Interestingly, MacBooks from the beginning of 2006 had 32-bit processors, only all models from October 2006 were equipped with 64-bit processors. Subsequent updates also introduced FireWire 800, more RAM, larger hard drives, faster processors, as well as better graphics cards – Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT instead of the previously used ATI Radeon X1600. The 2007 MacBook models were equipped with the latest Intel Santa Rosa processors – is a modernisation of the excellent Intel Centrino technology. The Santa Rosa platform introduced support for the faster FSB (Front Side Bus) 800MHz instead of the previously used 667MHz, a better mobile graphics chip Intel 965 (instead of Intel 945), as well as WiFi support in the 802.11n standard. It is worth noting that the first MacBook models did not have a Multi-touch trackpad – only models since 2008 have a Multi-touch trackpad.
