In 2006, Apple stopped producing iBook and PowerBook laptops and introduced the MacBook. Completely different design, no longer rounded shapes and colourful covers known from the iBook G3. In MacBook models, Apple ceases to mount PowerPC processors – created by itself in cooperation with Motorola and IBM – and began to use Intel processors. The MacBook is an entry-level laptop series aimed at the consumer and educational market, in addition to it, Apple also offers the mid-level MacBook Air and top-level MacBook Pro. The first-generation MacBook had a white or black Polycarbonate case (later also aluminium Unibody). The MacBook turned out to be a huge market success. For several months of 2008, it was the best-selling laptop in the United States.
First-generation MacBooks were equipped with Intel Core2Duo processors. Only the Early 2006 model had an Intel CoreDuo processor installed. They were equipped with an optical drive called ComboDrive or SuperDrive (however, you can find several models from 2008-2009 without an optical drive). Apple in this model for the first time presents the revolutionary MagSafe charger – no more torn out charging ports! Interestingly, in the first MacBook fluorescent lamp was used as the screen backlight. It wasn’t until 2008 that Apple used LEDs for this purpose and they also didn’t have a backlit keyboard. The MacBook is also the first model where Apple replaced the mini-VGA analogue port with a mini-DVI digital port. It had an Intel GMA graphics card integrated with the processor, or a separate Nvidia 9400M or 320M graphics card.

Known issues

  • The first models from 2006 had a problem with overheating - it was caused by a heat-emitting graphics card and hard disk.
  • Discolouration and chipping of the polycarbonate housing. Stronger pressing of the top cover caused palm rest cracks.
  • Problems reading battery information due to errors on the motherboard.
  • Too high temperature inside the MacBook caused damage to hard drives.
  • Poor quality rubber feet on the bottom of the MacBook.
  • The MagSafe port was sometimes fried because of the poor quality of the material and the high current of the charger.

After a few years break, Apple resumed production of the MacBook line in 2015 with a 12-inch screen. It was Apple’s most compact laptop at the time. Therefore, to distinguish it from the previous series, this model is called colloquially MacBook 12 inch, or MacBook Retina. The MacBook 12 inch is available in the following colours: Space Gray, Silver, Gold, Rose Gold and New Gold. Unlike the 1st generation MacBook, which ranks below the MacBook Air, the MacBook Retina is between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. It was also the quietest laptop of all MacBook, for the first time Apple used fanless cooling and an ultra-quiet Butterfly keyboard. Building a laptop without a fan was possible thanks to the use of a new, ultra-energy-efficient Intel Broadwell Core M processor (In newer models replaced by Intel Skylake Core M, and Intel Kaby Lake m3, i5, and i7.). The use of a new processor has also allowed to significantly reduce the size of the motherboard – it is now smaller than on some iPad models

The main disadvantage of this MacBook series was the use of only one USB-C port, which was also the charging port. This model no longer has a MagSafe connector. In addition, Thunderbolt is no longer supported, so if you have storage media with this connector or Apple Thunderbolt Display, they will not be supported by the MacBook Retina.

The MacBook Retina at first glance resembles the MacBook Air, but it is smaller, lighter, has a larger SSD memory and RAM memory – SSD and RAM are soldered permanently to the motherboard. Each keyboard key now has a backlight LED. This makes the keys highlight more evenly. The trackpad button has been replaced by haptic feedback, also used in Magic Trackpad 2 and MacBook Pro 2015.

Known issues

At present, mass defects of these models are not yet known.

MacBook screen replacement

MacBook screen replacement Bournemouth.

The screen in the MacBook is one of the most delicate elements. Each new generation has thinner lids, narrower frames. It certainly looks amazing, but it is also getting more delicate. I am afraid that soon for the MacBook it will be necessary to buy silicone bumpers that we buy for phones today.

When an accident occurs and your screen is damaged, take it easy – there’s a “Phones Rescue” that will professionally repair your MacBook.

MacBook Polycarbonate screen replacement

There are three different MacBook series that differ in the design of the screen. MacBook 13 inches produced in the years 2006 – 2012 did not have a glass protecting the screen. Its housing was made of white or black polycarbonate.

MacBook Unibody screen replacement

In 2009, Apple also presented the MacBook in an aluminium case – model MacBook Unibody A1278. Not to be confused with the MacBook Pro, which was also called A1278. This model had a glass protecting the LCD display against damage. In this model, it was possible to change the glass and LCD independently. This allowed to significantly reduce repair costs.

MacBook Retina screen replacement

Between 2012 and 2015, Apple no longer produced the MacBook, only the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. However, in 2015, Apple resumed production with the MacBook Retina model. This laptop had a 12-inch screen and the glass protecting the screen was permanently glued to the display. If the glass breaks, it must be replaced together with the LCD display.

The first generation MacBook Pro resembled a PowerBook G4, but was distinguished by the fact that an Intel processor was used instead of a PowerPC. This caused a lack of backward compatibility with applications from previous models. A webcam and innovative MagSafe charging connector have also been added. The optical drive used in the MacBook Pro 1 generation is slower than the one in the PowerBook, and also does not support Dual Layer DVD. Both 15 and 17 inch models were equipped with ExpressCard/34 slot (instead of the PC card used in the PowerBook) and FireWire 400 port. Apple has been criticised for the lack of FireWire800 ports. The MacBook 15 inch had 2 USB ports and the MacBook 17 had 3 USB 2.0 ports. All models had built-in Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 2.0 and WiFi ports working in the 802.11a/b/g standard – changed to 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 in newer models.
Interestingly, MacBooks from the beginning of 2006 had 32-bit processors, only all models from October 2006 were equipped with 64-bit processors. Subsequent updates also introduced FireWire 800, more RAM, larger hard drives, faster processors, as well as better graphics cards – Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT instead of the previously used ATI Radeon X1600. The 2007 MacBook models were equipped with the latest Intel Santa Rosa processors – is a modernisation of the excellent Intel Centrino technology. The Santa Rosa platform introduced support for the faster FSB (Front Side Bus) 800MHz instead of the previously used 667MHz, a better mobile graphics chip Intel 965 (instead of Intel 945), as well as WiFi support in the 802.11n standard. It is worth noting that the first MacBook models did not have a Multi-touch trackpad – only models since 2008 have a Multi-touch trackpad.

Known issues

  • First-generation MacBook Pro had problems with overheating. This was due to the use of a weak cooling system.
  • Instead of solving the cooling problem, Apple decided to under-clock the core of the Radeon graphics card (by about 35%) and its memory (by about 41%). This resulted in a noticeable decrease in graphics performance.
  • Some MacBook models had a problem with slight screen flicker when the backlight brightness was reduced.

In 2008, Apple completely changed the MacBook Pro (sometimes also colloquially called MBP). The main change was the use of a Unibody case, making the MacBook Pro look similar to MacBook Air and the new Aluminium iMac. The DVD inlet was moved from the front of the case to its right side and all ports to the left. MiniDVI port has been replaced by Mini DisplayPort.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro Unibody Mid 2009 version is equipped with the Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics card, Mid-2010 version has Nvidia GeForce 320M card and versions from 2011 have Intel HD Graphics 3000 or Intel HD Graphics 4000 cards. The 15 and 17-inch models have two graphics cards: Nvidia GeForce 9400M, and Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT, or from 2011 Intel HD Graphics 4000 and Nvidia GeForce GT 650M. OS X automatically selects which card is currently being used depending on the system load. If you have Windows installed on your MacBook, unfortunately, the weaker card is turned off and the system all the time using the more powerful but more power-consuming 9600M GT, or on newer models GT 650M.

The FireWire 400 port has been replaced by FireWire 800.

The buttons have been removed from the trackpad – from now on the entire trackpad can be used as a button. In addition, it is equipped with the Multi-touch function, supporting up to 4 fingers simultaneously.

The screen in the MacBook Unibody is protected by an additional glass that can be replaced separately in the event of damage.

In 2010, the MacBook Pro has a big update and Intel Core2Duo processors are replaced by Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt support is added, and some 15 and 17 inch models are equipped with powerful ATI graphics cards: Radeon HD 6490M or Radeon HD 6750M.

In 2011, Apple discontinues the production of the 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Known issues

  • The 2011 models had a huge problem with graphics cards. Problems could be manifested by artefacts on the screen, no image, and even a complete lack of computer response to the power-on button.

In mid-2012, Apple presents the next, third generation of the MacBook Pro line. What’s new introduced? First of all, the completely changed IPS Retina display with much better resolution and image quality. From now on, the MacBook Pro 15 inches has a resolution of 2880 × 1800px (Unibody had 1440x900px), and the MacBook Pro 13 inches has 2560x1600px (Unibody had 1280x800px). Apple no longer offers the MacBook Pro with a 17-inch screen. In addition, new Intel processors with Ivy Bridge architecture, USB 3.0, a second Thunderbird port, a standard size HDMI port and a new MagSafe 2 charging port.

From now on, the glass protecting the screen is glued to the LCD. This significantly improves the contrast and viewing angles, but if the glass breaks, the entire top lid needs to be replaced. This significantly increases the cost of repairing a damaged screen.

The MacBook Pro Retina has been stripped of its SuperDrive reader, Ethernet port, FireWire port and Kensington lock slot. Instead of HDDs, Apple mounts ultra-fast SSDs. It is worth noting that it is no longer possible to upgrade RAM – the bones are permanently soldered to the MacBook motherboard. Replacing the battery is now much more difficult – it is glued to the housing.

In 2013, Apple introduced to its MacBook Pro Retina Thunderbolt 2, new Intel processors with Haswell architecture, new graphics cards and 4K support via HDMI.

In 2015, Apple is making the latest MacBook Pro Retina upgrade by introducing Intel processors with Broadwell architecture, new graphics cards Iris 6100 and AMD Radeon R9, faster SSDs, faster RAM memory, as well as a new track-pad with Force Touch function.

Known issues

  • Some models from 2015 had defective batteries that could overheat and ignite. The risk was so great that Apple offered free replacement of defective batteries even after the warranty period, and some airlines banned MacBook Pro and could no longer be taken on board

In 2016, Apple presents the 4th generation MacBook Pro. What’s new? First of all, some models have been equipped with TouchBar – a narrow OLED screen bar placed above the keyboard integrated with the fingerprint reader. Don’t worry about the login password anymore! Thunderbolt 3 support with eGPU external graphics cards has been introduced, newer Intel Skylike processors and graphics cards have been installed.

One of the most recognisable features of the MacBook disappears – the glowing Apple logo on the lid. In addition, the HDMI port has been removed, USB 2.0 ports have been replaced with USB-C ports and the SD card reader has been removed. Other disadvantages include soldered motherboard SSDs on some MacBook Pro models.

In mid-2017, Apple updates processors for Intel Kaby Lake and graphics cards, and a year later introduced Intel Coffee Lake processors and the improved Butterfly 3 keyboard.

Unfortunately, and with this keyboard there were big problems, so in 2019 Apple again changed the keyboard with the introduction of Butterfly 4 – promising free replacement in case of problems over a period of 4 years.

Known issues

  • Despite the upgrade of the built-in keyboard to Butterfly 2 and Butterfly 3, customers still had big problems with button failures.
  • Big problems with MacBook Pro cooling especially on Intel i9 processors. Instead of improving the cooling of its MacBook Pro, Apple used a reduction in the processor clock frequency. As a result, the temperature limits were not exceeded, but the performance of the computer is much lower than declared by Apple and Intel.
  • Some MacBook Pro had problems with swelling batteries. The problem turned out to be so big that Apple was forced to replace defective batteries even after the warranty period.
  • Defective 128GB and 256GB SSDs resulted in the loss of customer data.
  • Common "Kernel Panic" due to a faulty motherboard T2 chip.
  • Defective LCD cables that have been damaged too quickly.

MacBook Air

Apple repair specialists in Bournemouth

The MacBook Air presented in 2008 was one of the thinnest laptops on the market and even today it looks modern and beautiful. Its thickness is under 2cm. Because of the dimensions, Apple had to compromise – the MacBook Air, for example, does not have a built-in DVD drive. Today this seems perfectly normal, but in 2008 it was a shock to users. In addition, the first versions did not have FireWire, Ethernet LAN connectors, nor a memory card reader.
